In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

As I started off by researching into a lot of different types of music magazine I discovered that there were a lot of similar conventions. On the front cover most of the magazine had a main image, main cover line, barcode, issue number, date, masthead, selling line and third left. I looked at simple look magazine which gives out strong tensions to the buyer as I wanted to do a "House music" magazine targeting for the mid-twenties who still in love with house musics so, I started to look at more simple, artistic and stylish magazine, such as "SPIN", "SPREAD ART CULTURE", "BILLBOARD", etc.
And they all have quite artistic, simple and empty front cover, content page and double page spread.
For my front cover I used one main head line telling what's my magazine is dedicated to, issue number, masthead, main image and the name of a model I used. A masthead "SMART BEAT" I used conventions of real media products which I followed the style "Smart" because my target group are mostly business mans. I also made masthead font look sharp and simple so it follows the style I want to stick with. For my content page I challenged forms and conventions of real media products by adding few photographs showing the main cover lines like the normal convention has and made it look simple so, readers can recognise what is on the pages. For my double page spread I challenged forms and conventions by realising that usually normal conventions has photograph of singers or stars on a page and interview article written on another page so, I photoshopped my model's photograph and used it on a page and writing an interview article on another page with a title of my interview and introduction to my model's life.

How does your media product represent particular social groups?

My magazine is targeted male of age 22-30 in the working industry. I decided the price of magazine £5.50 which is not expensive for people who are in working industry so, it is affordable for them and the price is middle range. My model is around age of 22. The model is dressed in a suit with a earphone in his ears listening to house music. I tried to show that there are lots of people from working industry that still love house music’s from when they were teenager so, I asked my model to wear suit and listen to house music, closing his eyes and both hands touching his ears because I want give an image that there are still business man that love to listen to house music’s but because they are an adults they listens to house music’s in a smart way, however still getting crazy in their mind.

What kind of media institution might distribute media product and why?

I think that the media institution such as "SPREAD ART CULTURE", "BILLBOARD" or "SPIN" magazine might distribute my house music magazine because I think that they all have quite similar target group as I am aiming for. Also I think they are famous for designing their magazines in an artistic and stylish way representing music, fashion and stars lifestyle. The layout of their magazines are quite similar as well that they keep it very simple but creates strong tensions to the readers and very independent compare to the other music magazines, for example their mastheads and fonts are designed really simple and easily read for the target audience so, I designed my masthead and used quite simple fonts for my target audience.

Evaluation 4

Who would be the audience for your media product?

The audience for my media product would be a male around the age 22-30 who are in the working industry employed full time. The public transport uses are usually underground, bus or car and also it could be a bicycle and walk. Their character is hard working but also have a crazy side that they love house musics and like to party. They are interested in a fashion, house music star's and new releasing albums.

Evaluation 5

How did you attract or address your audience?

Since my target audience are from working industry my magazine should reflect to everyone who still likes to listen to house musics so, I decided to dress my model in a suit with a listening to house musics with earphone which shows listening to house musics in a formal way and smartly because usually people in working industry are very busy all the time so I wanted to show that even if you are business man there is a way to enjoy house musics like they used to enjoy when they were teenager. Also through whole magazine I designed it very simple, stylish and artistic which is very different to other type of music magazines how they have very crazy style using lots of colours.

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

From the process of constructing this product I have learnt lots of technologies. As a start I didn't really know anything about magazines and that there was so much hard work put into create a magazine before starting to create my own music magazine. When I started to designing my own magazine I learnt about the layout how everything should be place so that it is easier to read and how the photograph should be taken for the front cover. I also learnt it is very important to think about magazine's reader ship, price of the magazine, which fonts to use through a magazine according to what type of magazine you are creating, how the photographs should be placed etc.

Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to full product?

Since my preliminary I learnt a lot more about creating front cover, content page and double page spread. I realised that masthead is very important for a magazine because it have to be clearly presented and the design of a masthead must follow style of the magazine and how you should take the photograph of your model for a front cover also if the quality of the photograph is bad it let down the front cover. Through magazine making I really realised how difficult it is to design a magazine that even little error can ruin your whole magazine. I think I improved a lot from preliminary task that my second magazine look more professional.
